Merriam Webster defines freedom in part as
Our country was founded on principles of freedom and what a great foundation for a country. Freedom gives us hope, the opportunity to succeed and fail, the prospect for a better futureThe absence of necessity, coercion or constraint in choice or action
There are elements of seeming chaos in a free society with individual actors all pursuing their own interests.
Such a system does not need government intervention, no master planner to oversee the results. In fact we are free to succeed solely on our own merit in the marketplace. There is no need for government oversight - no need for a nanny state. We make choices, the people around us make choices and the seeming chaos melds together into beautiful interactions between private individuals of their own volition.
Freedom is one aspect that helps breed an ownership society. If I am can pursue anything, if I can . Ownership means that as a society we do not look to the government for assistance when fate turns against us but rather we look to each other and to our faith institutions to lend a helping hand when needed.
Freedom is something we all must be vigilant to watch over. Often people wish to compromise our individual liberties for their own personal gain. Governments intrude in our lives from a misguided belief they know better, to preserve and collect more power, to buy votes, or to appease those who funded their election. Often in crisis we are told that just for a "limited" time this or that needs to be done and slowly these encroachments lead to a downward spiral with our individual liberties eroding away. We have a responsibility to ourselves and to future generations to protect this precious gift.
Freedom is truly a blessing that leads to the unknown and harbors an element of danger and an even greater element of promise. There are no guaranteed outcomes with freedom, only the assurance that we are free to try, free to fail, free to try again and free to succeed. So onward with freedom to the unknown...
